PILE-DRIVER PUNT BREAKS. AWAY
MISHAP DURING FLOOD As the result of heavy rain in the upper reaches, the Manawatu River rose quickly to flood level during Thursday night and yesterdaymorning. At the height of the ; flood, which recdrded almost 22 feet at the Shannon Bridge, a piledriver attached to a punt, which is operated in connection with protec-
tion work near Mr. S. W. Barber's house at' Moutoa, snapped its moorings and drifted down streafn. By the time sufficient men were gathered to retrieve it, the punt was almost to the bridge. As there was a grave danger of the 40-foot high derrick striking the power lines and perhaps electrifying the bridge, the power was cut off from the main Foxton line. However, a line was got/to the punt and it was made fast in the mouth of the Tokomaru Stream. There it will remain until the flood has subsided and it can be returned to its original position.
