FINAL GALLOPS HELD
UNFAVOURABLE CONDITIONS AT AWAPUNI IMPERIAL REGISTERS SOUND TRIAL Final gallops for the Wellington meeting at Awapuni yesterday were held under atrocious eonditions, heavy rain setting in before operations commenced and continuing throughout the morning. The course proper, with the pegs out 30ft., was in use, the going soon becoming waterl^gged. There were a number of visiting horses present and, although there were no illuniinating trials, candidates who worked soundly were Imperial, Saludos, Langue d'Or, Czarina, Emerge, Tremeilo, Blue Chips and Winning Ticket. After running the first two in 27 1-5 sec., Dutch Mary (Saunders) cbmpleted five furlongs pleasingly in 1.9. Saludos (Boreham) and Langue d'Or (Sellars) were associated over a mile in 1.55 2-5, the last five furlongs occupying 1.12, and the three 43 2-5see. Both finished strongly, and Saludos, who looks improved after his run at Masterton, has now definitely come into calculations for the main event on Saturday. Two-year-olds Work Prefa (Andrews), had little difficulty in leaving five furlongs behind in 1.12, the last three in 43 3-5sec. The Hastings pair, Opulent (Broughton) and Blue Moon (Waddell), were both doing it well at the end of five furlongs in 1.10 1-5, the last three in 42 l-5see. If the going is very heavy the former is unlikely to start to-morrow. The Trentham juveniles, Biithe Spirit (Wilson), Deep Sea (Aitken) and Veine d'Or (Spratt), took 1.12 for five furlongs, the first-named appearing to be doing best at the finish. , The disappointing Tahli (Boreham) was doing just as well as Winning Ticket (Sellars) at the end of six furlongs run in 1.24 2-5, a fair effort. In recording 1.23 3-5, Czarina (Buchanan) was responsible for a pleasing gallop, and drew attention to her prospects in the middle-distance hack event on Saturday. The G-uineas eandidate Emerge (Waddell) finished stoutly to shade Prince Wanaka (Aitken) over seven furlongs run in 1.40, the last three occupying 43 2-5sec. A Smart Effort Blue Chips (Iiout) displayed her usual speed while running five furlongs in 3.8 3-5, the last three in 42 3-5sec. Bay Jtobe (Nieol) handled the going well to eomplete the last five furlongs of his work in 1.11 2-5. The Wainui Handicap candidates, Imperial (Collins), Stony Broke (Boreham) and Flying Aee (Waddell) were associated over seven furlongs in 1.39 2-5, the last three being run in 43 4-5sec. Imperial did his work very impressively to shade Stony Broke at the finish, with Flying Aee a couple of lengths away. The Hastings two-year-old Erinmore (Waddell) reeled off three furlongs in 41 3-5sec. Financial (Boreham) moved in his usual free style while encompassing a mile in 1.56, the last three furlongs taking 43sec. Airpier (Saunders) registered 1.11 2-5 for five furlongs. Tribute (Bowness) took 1.12. Hakim
(Harris) and Dileas (Arney) ran from the seven-furlong barrier in 1.41 1-5, the last three in 44 2-5sec. Leigh .Barton Fit With the going Toecoming increasingly worse at this stage, Flying Orders (Sellars) took 1.12 for five furlongs, the last three occupying 28see. Sir Bradbury (Waddell) and Lord Bradbury (Broughton) required 1.16 2-5 for their five furlongs. Over the same ground G-ay Stroller (Sellars) reeorded 1.14. Leigh Barton (Smith), who looks a mass of eondition, was let off with an easy three furlongs in 43 3-5sec., and he did not appear to be troubled by the going. A Wellesley, Stakes eandidate, Zorro (Clutterbuck), was speeded up over the last two furlongs of his work in 29 1-5 sec. lle is a speedy loolcing sort and is well forward. Loolcing benefited by reccnt racing, Tremeilo (Harris). strode out well over seven furlongs in 1.38, the last three occupying 42 3-5sec. Palm Bearer ((Tutterlmck) ->eame home the last two furlongs of her work smartlv in 27 4-5sec. Old Red (Skinner) eompleted his work by running the last three furlongs in 44 3-5see. Matawene (Reid) was finishing better tlian Welcome Guest (Broughton) over seven furlongs run in 1..42 3-5, the last three in 44 3-5sec. The former is very fit and lias prospects if the going remains soft. The stablemates Renowned and Bridge Acre worked separately at a steady pace over five furlongs. Bridge Acre impressed by her muscular appearance and revelled in the going. A favoured Guineas eandidate, Privilege (Wilson), .ran the last five of a working gallop over six furlongs in 1,18 3-5sec.
She has developed into a very solid filly and southerners expect her to be difficult to beat in the three-year-old classie ' to-morrow. Golden Souvenir was allotted a couple of rounds of strong pace work on the sand. He looks as if he has come through a solid preparation and is to gallop' this morning. Kindergarten also got through a useful task on the sand. Among other visiting horses who were let off with easy tasks were Thornbridge, Peter Theio, Lord Elgin, Sanskrit and Kartikeya. Theolateral (Buchanan) and Lanoma (McGuire) were associated in a bout over six hurdles, the former being in front throughout, but neither were partieularly impressive. Red Glare (Waddell)" and Greek Dancer (Rouse) gave a sound exhibition over six hurdles, being on terms throughout*
