Labour Week-end Racing

L.M

,M.)

( SPECIAL— FROM

WELLINGTON, This Day. Labour. week-end racing will open tomorrow with the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting at Awapuni, where latest indications point to the track being heavy after a good soaking earlier in the week. Fields are not up to usual Wellington standard, but they are of handy size. There is every likelihood that divisions in the Wellington Guiheas and Wellesley Stakes will be avoided. Lord Elgin has come into strong favour for the Wellington Handicap and Opulent in the Shorts Handicap. Other meetings to be held tomorrow are Stratford, Rotorua, Gore and Poverty Bay, all of which are reviewed on this page. Win and plaee betting operates at all meetings. The Wellington fields are briefly reviewed as under:

11.0. —Glen Hurdle Handicap, of £350; one mile and three-quarters: Red Glare, 11.12; The Monarch, 11.6; Bay Robe, 9.13; Abdicate, Greek Dancer, 9.12; Tid-Apa, Peach King, 9.11; Gay Flame, 9.9; Hasten, 9.8; Nanook, 9.1; Old Red, Theolateral and Lanoma, 9.0. The Glen Hurdles has not drawn a strong field numerically, the best being Red Glare and the improvmg Bay Robe. By his good race in ohe highweight of Masterton last week Hasten might surprise as he is a class jumper. Abdicate and The Monarch read the best of the others. . 11.45. — wellington Guineas, of 1250 guineas; three-year-olds; one mile: Castlebrae, Desert Fox, Emerge, Flying Robin, Hormond, Howe, Julius Caesar, Keening, Matara, Moroceo, Omit, Penicillin, Revivre, Robin's Reward, Rosswood, Royal Baron, Tribute, Zeaiander, 8.10, Blue Tie, Daneing Girl, Palm Bearer, Perfect Peace, Privilege, Sakuntala, Sea Fury, 8.5. In the Wellington Guineas Julius Caesar and Robin's Reward have good prospects. Other interesting ihree-year-olds are Keening and Privilege. However the favourite, Howe, will no . doubt predominate with strong opposition from Rosswood. 12.35— Wainui Handicap, of £700; nine furlongs: Longsword, 9.2; Master Robin, 8.12; Leigh Barton, 8 7" Hormuz, 8.6; Battle Dance, 8.4; Imperial, 7.13; Stony Broke, Flying Acre, 7.12; Dileas, Barrage, 7.9; High Order, Gay Stroller, 7.6; Gay Lena, 7.4; Delinquent, 7.2; Carnforth, Master Baron, Indian Gold. 7.1; Lady Scholar, Cooraclare, 7.0. Leigh Barton is well forward to tackle the Wainui Handicap, and with Master Robin is the ruling* favourite. With such good distance performers engaged as Imperial, Battle Dance, Stony Broke, Barrage and Dileas, a good race can be a.ntirfinated. "•

1.25 — Rimutaka Hack Handicap, i of £300; seven furlongs: Tremeilo, - 9.0; Beile Zorro, Prefa, 8.12; Final - ist, Sea Fury, 8.11; Carmelita, 8.6; - Prince Wanaka, 8.4; Zahra, The Saddler, Winning Ticket, 8.2; Ser- ' geant Jack, 8.1; Lord Bradbury, Balcherrie, 7.11; Gay Tide, 7.10; Hadrian, 7.9; Lady Delight, Selas, - 7.7. The three outstanding form horses in the. Rimutaka Hack 1 Handicap are Sea Fury, Prince Wanaka and Tremeilo. It might be well to remember Tremello's fine performance under a heavy weight at Otaki on the first day. There was solid support for Sergeant Jack at Otaki, but he disappointed. Winning Ticket is tfrell forward and with conditions to suit is a distinct . lightweight prospect. ! 2.15— Wellington Handicap, of £1250; one mile and flve furlongs: Golden Souvenir, 9.10; Financial, 9.2; Bridge Acre, Young Trent, 8.8; Lord Elgin, 7.13; "Hulabaloo, 7.12; Thornbridgc, 7.9; Silver Rod, 7.7; Singing Hills, 7.5; Lord Darnley, 7.3; Hakim, 7.2; Abdicate, 7.1. . Although the usual quantity is mlssing the Wellington Handicap has drawn a good quality field. Lord Elgin is a firm favourite and in his present form must hold good prospects, Golden Souvenir, Financial, Young Trent, Thornbridge and Silver Rod are all well forward. Silver Rod and Financial both look pictures of fitness, especialiy so Financial whose poor showing at Masterton last week can be overlooked. 3.5 — wellesley Stakes, of £1250; two-year-olds; five furlongs: Atomic Energy, Carry On, Demonic, Distinction, Fellowship, Foxaere, General Post, Helio, Kartikeya, Master Roe, Night School, Ninnid, Prince Coronach, Royal Cambria, Sea Lad, Sir Royal, Sparkling Scholar, Tara Hall, The Trojan, Thimble, Zorro, 8.7; Belle Ajiita, Beckon, Colorado Maid, Full of Fun, Kumari, Lace, Lady Christine, Lady Vite, Marilyn, Meteorina, Myfox, Renowned, Robinette, Torrent and Veine d'Or, 8.2. The Wellesley Stakes might be run as one race. Best prospects in the first division are Lady Christine, Belle Anita, if started, Demonic and Robinette, while in the second division Zorro, Master Roe, Distinction and Lace will have good followings. 3.55— Shorts Handicap, of £700; six furlongs: Tuis, 9.2; Peter Robin - son, 8.13; Royal Heir, 8.12; Deprive, 8.8; Langue d'Or, 8.5; Sir Bradbury, 8.0; Opulent, 7.13; Flying Orders, Blue Chips, 7.12; Sir Wina, 7.9; Sanskrit, Gay Lena, 7.7; Julius Caesar, 7.3; Peter Theio, 7.1; Blue Tie, Transmittel, Dutch Mary, 7.0. The class sprinters in the Shorts Handicap are Tuis, Peter Robinson, Royal Heir, Opulent and Blue Chips and if Julius Caesar (is started in the Wellington Guineas, and an absentee here, the winner appears to be concealed among the above horses. Opulent and Royal Heir are very well. Peter Robinson is a doubtful starter. If

started here » Julius Caesar will carry heavy support. i 4.45 — October Hack Handicap, of i£350; nine furlongs: Iron Duke, j 8.8 ; Flying Robin, 8.5; Matawene, j 8.4; Top Shot,, Incline, 8.2; Cock Robin, Tahli, 8.1; Buddy, 8.0; Czarina, Blue Moon, 7.13; Haere Huku, 7.7. The concluding event, the October Hack, looks like Haere Huku holding a good chance to make it two on end. Czarina is also not without good prospects, best of the others being- Matawene and ; Incline. In eertain quarters the last named is regarded as a good "outside" proposition. * . • _•
