HORSES AT AWAPUNI
FINAL GALLOPS THIS MORNING The first of the visitiiig horses for the Wellington meeting put in an appearance at Awapuni yesterday morning and they were the Hawke's Bay candidates Opulent', Blue Moon, Erinmore and Iioyal Heir, wh'o raeed at Ellerslie last Saturday. Further arrivals were expeeted during the day, including the southerners Leigh Barton, Zorro, Palm Bearer, Finalist, Privilege, Golden Souvenir, Bridge Aere, Renowned, Thornbridge, Sanskrit, Carry On and Kartikeya. If conditions are favourable there should be some very interesting trials in the final gallops this moming, when the No. 1 grass will be available. Serviceable work on the sand and the plough was the order yesterday moming, when the weather was very bleak and unpromising. The jumpers provided main interest and the honours went to Peach Iving (Buehanan) and Thunderhead (Wad dell), who gave a good exhibition in a bout over six hurdles. Thunderhead is now without a rider at Stratford as M. •Andrews is to remain at Awapuni to ride Bay Kobe and Prefa. Old Eed (Rouse) and Co-operatc (Rout) schooled over six hurdles, the latter shapiug well, but Old R$d whacked every fence and removed a good deal of skin from both forelegs. Prince Alehemie (Andrews) was sent onee dowa the chute and was then schooled over four of the bigger hurdles. He jumped slowly, but safely. Additional riding engagements announced are: — J.
