DISCOVERY IN SECRET CRYPT
BODIES OF THREE FAMOUS CONQUERORS Received Wednesday, 7 p.m. LIMA (Peru), Oct. 22. The remains of three famous Conquistadors, missing for 400 years, were discovered in a secret crypt of Lamerced Church at Cutco. They were Diego Almagro the elder, conqueror of Chile and conqueror of Peru, Diego Almagro the younger, and Gonzalo Pizarro, half-brother of Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Peru. Searchers followed leads contained in the historical chronicles of the Incas. The bodies were garbed in regal robes and the richness of the vestments and coffins reflected their liigh rank. All met violent deaths. Almagro the elder, after eortquering Chile, returned to Peru,, defied Francisco Pizarro 's authority, was captiu'ed, garrotted and his body heheaded publicly in 1538. The younger Almagro, aged 24, sought to avenge his father's death hy aiding the asSassination of Francisco Pazarro but he was captured and decapitated ih 1542. Gonzalo Pizarro was executed in 1548 after . taking over the Governorship of Peru hy force.
