I only GASWORKS LOAN PASSED j ! — iii; | RATEPAYERS SHOW LITTLE INTEREST IN j S BOROUGH LOAN POLL | ! — ! p The Levin Borough Council's loan proposals for various | S public works projects, Which were put to vote yesterday, resulted | | in all but the loan for the borough gasworks being turned down. ? | The total amount asked for by the council was £22,300. A sum of I | £2000 was involved in the proposed gasworks loan, and this was | ! the only one which would not have been a charge on rates. , j I ' Only 336 ratepayers voted yesterday out of a potential poll of | I 900. Voting was quiet during the morning and afternoon. The 1 | busiest periods occurred at mid-day, and between 5 and 6 p.m. I j That only about one-third of the ratepayers should have gone te j ! the poll on an issue of considerable importance shows a sur- | { prising lack of interest. ! | In detail the proposals were that loans be raised for the j j following purposes: — ! | £12,500 — For the purchase of machinery, plant and equipment, I | and for improvements to streets and footpaths. j § £6,850 — The extension and reticulation of the borough water I | system. [ I _ £2,000— The extension and reticulation of the borough gas sys- j | tem. | , £450 — The purchase of a section fronting Hannan Street, and ,| ' house and section fronting Victoria Street, for the exten- | j sion of Sussex Street through to Hannan Street. ~ I f £500 — The purchgse of the section at the corner of Queen and | j Chamberlain Streets, lo provide for sl reserve. | 5 The following are the proyisional figures released this morn- j | ing.
