YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

By Telearavh-

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. Tliree .of the four matches piayed in. the fourth round of the New Zealand women 's amateur golf ehanipionship at Shirley today, produced iinislies which would have been worthy of a golfnrg novel. All three fmished on the last green and one, Mrs. C. J. Ward (Christchurch) staged a most remarkable recovery against Mrs. P. R. Glanville (Te Awamutu), after being five down with six to pJay, ouly to lose when the' last hole was haived. The other two winners were Mrs. B. Andrews (Hokitika) who beat Mrs. J. K. Dolan (Otago) and Miss J. Borwell (Timaru) who beat Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch). In the fourth matcli Mrs. G-. H.' Hollis (Titirangi) had a surprisingly easy win over Miss R. Hodges (Auckland), the game ending on the 14th green. Conditions were ideal for golf today and most competitors appreciated the change from the wintry conditions experieneed during most of the tournament. The course was again in excellent order and the greens faster than yesterday. Results : — : Amateur Championship. Fourth round: -Mrs. B. Andrews (Hokitika) beat Mrs. J. K. Dolan (Otago) 2 up. Mrs. G. H. Hollis (Titirangi) beat Miss R. Hodges (Auckland) 5 and 4. Mrs. P. R. Glanville (Te Awamutu) beat Mrs. C. J. Ward (Christchurch) 1 up. Miss J. Horwell (Timaru) beat Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) 1 up. New Zealand Plate. Third round: Miss E. Parsons (Hammer) beat Miss E. Nutt (Christchurch) 2 and 1. Mrs. W. Toomey (Christchurch) beat Mrs. G. Sim (Miramar) 8 and 0. Miss E. Wilkinson (Grange) beat Mrs. W. A. Scott (Timaru) 4 and 3. Miss K. I. Bliand (Otago) beat Mrs. W. D. McCarthy (fc>t. Olair) 6 and 5. The keyuote of the golf piayed -by Mrs. Andrews througliout the tournament, again carried her to victory in her match against Mrs. Dolan. Mrs. Andrews was sound and metliodical and piayed conlidently from tee to gxeen. Mrs. Dolan, a longer hitter, frequently fell into errors and toolc risks to reeover, one or two of which were illadvised. Extronie accuracy around-the greens gave Mrs. Glanville an early and gubstantial lead in her match "against Mrs. Ward. She had birdies at the fourth where she lioled her cliip, aud ninth, to go out in 38, really excellent scoring, and turn for home with a lead of three. Mrs. Ward piayed her, tee sliots soundly but wa's ebli|>s(?daiti hei-^short game by Mrs. Glanville. After an excellent start Miss Hodges went to jjieces in her game against Mrs. Hollis and was beaten 5 and 4. Miss Hodges hit a magniheent drive at the first but the shot was misleading and she was frequently olf the line with her subsequent tee sliots. Her approaehing and putting too were not up to standard, while Mrs. Hollis, after an indilferent beginning, hit practically every shot straight up the middle and was rarely in difficulty. Miss Buchanan put up a very stout fight against Miss Horwell and at no stage of the game did the winner liold the lead of more than one hole. Miss Horwell was sound off the tees and putted well but some of her approaehing was indilferent. Miss Buchanan, a long hitter, was occasionally in trouble and putted poorly at times but she stuck to her task well and provided the gallery of about 100 with a thrilling finish.
