Received Wednesday, 12.45 p.m. LONDON, October 22. The British warships Saumarez and Volage struck mines in the channel between Corfu and Albania while proceeding from Corfu with the cruisers Mauritius and Leander. Saumarez was the flotilla leader, and was built in 1.942. Reuter's correspondent aboard the Mauritius says the v mine struck the Saumarez below the starboafd superstructure. The vessel immediately settled by the bow and oil fuel caught fire. The Volage took the damaged and burning vessel in tow, and was towing her when bhe also struck a mine. The Volage, which was built in 1943, had her bows blown off. The casualties are unknown. The Saumarez was the second vessel to pass the channel, and the Leander and Volage were following her. The correspondent says that navigation of the straits is restricted to a mile wide channel between minefields.
