FIRST CRICKET MATCHES

OPENING DAY MARRED BY RAIN . The 1946-47 cricket season started off in bad weather on. Saturday, and the games played were marred by the continual drizzling rain. The weather caused several to be abandoned after the fielding team had had a good soaking. Bowlers were unable to handle the ball' truly, and in some cases sawdust .was used on the pitch. The erratic bowling gave the batsmen a good chance to gather runs, and one of the most remarkable knocks was that of V. Lynch (Old Boys), who stepped out and made 25 runs in five minutes, an average of five runs a minute. Andrews (College) , Carrington (Levin) and McDonald (Weraroa) all returned good figures with the ball.
