Abattoir Killings The stock siaughtered at the Levin Abattoir during September, with the numbers for the corresponding month of last year in parentheses, were given as follows by the manager, Mr. F. E. Larsen, to last evening's meeting of the Levin Borough Council: Cattle 693 (779), sheep and lambs 3761 (4528), calves 27 (44), pigs 323 (29). The fees for the month were £902 14s 5d, as compared with £580 17s 8d in September of last year. Library Books Issued During the month of September the issue of books at the Levin Public Library were as follows: Country Library Service 623, Levin stock 5483 and juniors 400. These figures were given in the report of the librarian (Mrs. M. Whitaker) submitted to a meeting of the Levin Borough Council last .night. It further stated that 51 books' were added to the stock during the I month, four of' them works of non- | fiction, while twelve new books had | been added to thve junior section. i Water Service- Charges j At a meeting last evening of the I Levin Borough Council, on thc i recommendation of its works committee, decided to amend the appropriate by-law to provide that all water service, pipes for ordinary domestic supply in the borough, between the main and the boundary of the eonsumer's premises, be laid by the borough at the cost of the consumer, the charge to be fixed from tiftfe to time by the council. It was further decided that a charge of £2 10s be made for each ordinary half-inch connection. Quettes for Ration Books? "With three days of rhe renewal period to run, about 3000 ration books remain to be issued," stated the postmaster, Mr. L. A. Whitham, today. "While there has been a steady flow of applications, it is evident that there will be the usual long queus at the end of the period. It is emphasised that holders of ration books should present their book to their retailer, to register and have the counterfoils removed, as soon as possible. The retailers ! are required to . f urnish returns at j an early date of registrations 1 effected." Not Wanted! "I do not think any member of this council had any idea of it or 1 desire for the extehsion," said the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) in | referring at last evening's meeting j of the Levin Borough Council to ! the recent legislation under which ! the local body elections have been [ postponed from May to November, ! 1947., "I can see no shadow of j reason for it, nor that anytgood can [ eome from the exteiisiori of the | life of local bodies.
