Received Suxiday, 7.15 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 20. Tlie weather was perfect for the (Jaulfield races and the attendance of 107,1(31 was a record, the best previous being 90,212. Bernborougli failed to create a weight-earryiug record in the Cup, linishing fifth after having been last at tlie six furlongs. When he beeame clear he made up a lot of ground, but was unable to overtake the leaders. The winner, Royal Gem, has proved himself one of the best horses in Australia over short distances. Last Saturday he won the Toorak Handicap, but after that performance most racegoers considered the extra half-mile too far as he appeared to be weakening at the end of the mile. This resulted in his starting at an outside price today, but he caine home strongly to defeai Columnist, who looked all over the winner at the furlong post. Columnist was the most fancied against the hot t'avourite, Bernborough. Another outsider in Two Grand surprised by running a good third. The New Zealand mare First In was heavily supported, but failed to sliow out, fmishing well back. She is likely to be better suited by the two miles in the Melbourne Cup. Royal Gem proved very profitable for his owner, Mr. G. W. Badinan, and this was his most important success. Chaytor, second in the Aletropolitau, also failed to reproduce that forin and was never a possibility.
