LENGTHY POWER FAILURE IN WAIKATO

AUCKLAND, Oct. 20. An electric power failure which lasted for 17 hours oecurred in Huntly at 4.30 p.m. yesterday during the worst electrical storm the district has experienced for many years. When lightning struek the main buss bar of the awiteiiing apparatus at Huntly, sub-station, the whole of , the equipment at the station, which is in the Central Waikato Electric Power Board's area, was put out of order and the township- remained in darkness' throughout the night, After working all night the local staff of the station, assisted by a gang of State hydro-electric employees from Hamilton, restored the power at 9.30 a.rn. today. Telephone communications vvcre also affected by the failure, but in most cases these were. restored within an hour. In the dairying districts many farmers were unable to milk their herds "•at the usual time yesterday evening, but power was available to many of them again at 10 p.m. and milking was done with machines this morning.
