Several oppositionists had urged all tiiekel coins arguing tliat they would he cleaner. mueh more diflieult to countfcrfeit and would last lenger, but Mr. Hau expl.'iined that the Mint 's equipmenr eould not deal with pure niekel coins and even if furnaces available in Oenuany were brought over, it would be iinpossible to instal tliem. He added tluit oue day the nation would have. to eonsider rebuilding the Mint on another site.
