ELECTION CAMPAIGN OPENS
. MR. HOLLOWAY AX SHANNON Electlon campaigning commenced in Shannon on Thursday evenlng, when Mr. Phil Holloway, Labour candidate for the Manawata electorate, addressed a gathering of over 200 electors in the Renown Theatre. In , introducing the speaker, the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) said that Mr. Holloway was a young man who had travelled much and had a wlde experience of conditions in other countries. He had been through university and had fravelled in the United States as a lectarer. Before the war he was on the staff of Sir Stafford Cripps' newspaper in England. He was a returned serviceman of World War. II, and had the benefit of a high education and the broad outlook of one who had travelled. Mr. Downes also made reference to the fact that Shannon was formerly in the Otaki electorate, when it was in thC fortunate position of being represented by Mr. L. G. Lowry, who had always been an able member- and had done much for the district. In presenting Mr. Hollo-. way, the chairman said th'at it was fitting for him to step into Mr. Lowry's place in Shannon, and he was a man well fitted to serve the Manawata electorate as a member of Parliament. In his address, which was listened to quietly and with great interest by those present, Mr. Holloway dealt with the stabilisation of prices, problems confronting New Zealand today, the guaranteed price and farming matters, social security and - rehabilitation, and also outlined his party policy for the future. Mr. Holloway Impressed those present with his fine platform manner and the forceful presentation of his address. As this was only the second political address hc had given, those who heard him on Thursday evenhig were all of the opinion {that with a Httle more experience |Mr. Holloway will be a great asset i-to the country. FoJlowing the , address a motion of thanks to Mr. Holloway, and confidence in him as a candidate for the Labour j Party in the Manawata electorate, was carried unaniinously by a show of hands. i Mr. Holloway will address elec- ! tors in thp Koputaroa Hall on Monday evening.
