Rain Makes Green Tricky
By Telegraph—
. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 18. Tliere were no rnajor stirpriscs when tlio first round of the. New Zealand women 's amateur golf championslnp was "/played at Shirley, Two of the eight .seoded players.. won matchcs t>y defauit and the remaiiiing six all won their games fairly comfortably. Overnight .rain had takcn inost 'of thc pace from the cour&e and with tho fall continuing for inost of the day, conditions for golf were unplcasant. The cliange in -playin^ conditions, compared witli the previous day, was niost marked. Although the players found they could pitch up to the pin with safety, a procedure which brought disaster on tne first day, most of theni .wero unable to handle the wet grcens, especially in the early stages. Win for Youthful Player One of the best performances of the dav was that of Miss R. Hodges, tne 21-year-old Aucklander, who beat Mrs. W. Toomey (Christchurch) 3 and 2. Although Miss Hodges had a six at tne first and seven at the 424 yard seventh, she was, out in 40 to lead three up.ai the turn. Her tee shot at, the short ninth fmished two feet from the pm and her half in the conditions, was an excellent effort. Miss Hodges has an easy natural swing and her tee shots are consistently sound and her iron play clean and sure. On the greens, too, she was sound'and for a player who has had only about three years ' competitive golf, slie is reinarkably well-equipped. Mrs. Toomey hit tee shots well, 'but suffered occasional lapses with irons. She reduced her opponeiit's lead to one at the twelfth green, but was unabie to retain the initiative. Unusual Happening The Canterbury provincial champion, Miss Z. Hudson, had an interesting game with Mrs. R. G. Edward (Rangiora). Although in the second half, Miss Hudson was on several oceasions hard pressed, she refused to be rattled and owed her victory as much perhaps to an excellent temperament as to stea'cty golf. Miss Hudson won the first two holes in rather uniiupressive fives. Both women hit good tee shots alniQst. throughout the round, but iii the eariy stages, Mrs. Edward lost several oppoitunities on the greens. Miss Hudson had a great cliance of a birdie at tde short ninth, but halved the hole to lead two up turning for home. She was not playing brilliant golf but her 42 out , was a steady efi'ort. Miss Hudson won the tenth and halved the eleventh. The
game appeared to be going in her iavour, but Mrs. Edward sank a good putt firmly to win the next. At the short thirteenth, "Old Nick" (128 yards), the game took a most unusual turn. Both players found the bunker to the right of the green with their tee shots. Miss Hudson explodeu out and appeared likely to go well through but the ball hit the flag about two feet from the top and bounced back to leave her a putt of about 10 feet. Mrs. Edward then exploded out her shot, being low and carrying plenty. It also hit the pin aiid bounced back to leave Miss Hudson a half stymie. Mrs. Edward won the hole to become one dovrn. At the next, Miss Hudson again hit the pin with her appToach but Mrs. Edward ignorcd the chhllenge and halved wi'th a ^ care^ul .fiyeL .Miss Hudson won 'tlle fifteen'^^^^c^evUptaiued a partial stymie, -iwrarlost tlie loi^f sixtcenth iwhen the second shot found Ihe creek.
