NORTH ISLAND WIN TEAMS MATCH
Bv Telearavh-
CHRISTCHURCH, Oet. 17. Perfeet conditions favoured the opening at Shirley today, of the New Zealand woraen's golf championship. Although many contestants had not played competitive golf for , several years, the standard during the day was remarkably .high and in recording 77 to win the loursomes championsliips, Miss C. Smith (Invercargill) and Miss E. Hudson- (Christchurch) returned an excellent score for foursomes play. In tlie other major event decided during the day, the Nofth lsland had the 'most -comfortable of wins over the Soutli lsland, in the annual teams match, Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch} achieving South 's solitai'y success. The course was in excellent order but inany players fell into the error of attempting to pitch to the pin, a fault that has been noticeable in golf locally in the last weelc or two. Many seemed to play as though conditions were those experienced1 in mid-winter. However, there were several fine contests in the inter-Island game and' the scoring in the foresomes championship was, when it is remembered that that tournament was but at the opening, satisfactory. Misses Hudson and Smith put up a fme perforinance in winning the foursomes championship. They were out in 39 in spite of seven at the fifth, and were back .in 38. Miss Smith was sound with the woods and Miss Hudson played her irons well throughout the round. The putting of both players was sound although on several occasions putts for birdies stayed on the lip of the cup. The runners-up, Misses Horwell and Fleming, both putted well apd played soundly from tee to green. However, they had to take the penalty at the seventeentli after Miss Horwell had driven into the creek and this probabiy cust thcm the title. The inter-Islund match was rather a one-sided affair although many of the iudividual contests were close and produced good golf. Mrs. G. W. Hollis played sound golf in beating Miss J. Horwell in the hrst match. She was out in 38 to lead three up at the turn and her golf throughout was cool and capable. She was espeeially sound on the greens where Miss Horwell, although putting reasonably well, could not hold her. The Timaru player brought her deiicit back to oue going to the sixteeiith but Mrs. Hollis wou the hole to be dorrnie oue, and the uext was halved. Miss Hudson had a great battle with Mrs. P. Glanville (To Awainutu) which did not end until the last green. Miss R. llodges (Auckland) began badly agaiust Miss H. A. Penn (Russley), wlio was in front at the turn one up.. Mrs. I'enn won the tenth iu par iigures, and the ncxt was halved but over the remainder of the round Miss Hodges played extremely good golf, coming iu iu par iigures to win comfortablv. At the start of the match she frequently hooked her drivcs but once settled down she showed herself to be a most competent golier with a parLicularly attractive putter. Mxs. i'enn played solid golf but was una,ble jlo produce the. to h?ep, the game alive. ' " :! ; {«"'« Leading scores iu ihe ' iitiursoiilfes championships: n , J ; j T ! | ' - jd'i: !
