SOMETHING REALLY CHEERFUL

(Speeial Correspondent.)

LONDON, Oct. 1.5. Satisfactiou is expressed at Sir Stafford Cripps's announcement that the restrictious on the quantity of gift pareels that may be reeeived in Britain from abroad have now been removed. In the words of the News Chroniee, .the announcement is "something really .cheerful. " It adds that the announcement will be widely welcomed by those .fortunate enough to have friends overseas. But, it continues, wrhat has worried most people is, not so much the quantity of the pareels, but the fact that many of those sent did not ,reach their destinations. The oflicial ,explanation for this used to be that such pareels w-ere overweight aud, therefore, liable to seizure by the Customs. "Now that the weight restric.tions have also beeu cousiderably modified, perhaps safe delivery will once again become the rule rather thau the exceptiou. 1 ' The Daily Telegraph, remarkiug that Sir Stafford Cripps iu cousultatiou with the Ministry of Food has thouglit again, says: "This chauge of view has certaiuly beeu pronipted by pressure, from the Domiuious. It is signilicant that Sir Stafford Cripps 's annouucemeut was auticipated by thc Post-master-Geueral of New Zealaud." The Telegraph coutiuues: Now the auuouucement does nothing to rccompeuse past losses or to smooth the exasperated feelings of many geuerous donors overseas wliose pareels to friends here have been calinly coniiscated for months past. Aeting no doubt on the tlieory that is so prominent in t'liis Socialist Govemment's jiolicy that it is easier to level down than to level up, Sir Stafford Cripps 's departmeut. liitherto,- has doue its best to peualise any fainilies fortuuate euough to have friends overseas. Now that it is slialned out of this dog-in-tlie-mauger attitude by indignation iu the Domiuious, it is ciiaracteristic that 'eoucessiOus' are presented without apology for the pre- , vio'fis uhwar i'aufcetl " llitef f 6reude ! " WitJh the mails. "
