HEAVY RAIN IN SOUTHLAND
INVERCARGILL, Oct. 16. A total of 2.44 inches of rain fell in Invercargill in the 48 hours to 5 p.m. today. The fall for 24 hours to 9 a.m. was 1.91 inches, the liigliest for any day since 1939. Rain is still falling tonight but not heavily. Some houses iu North Otautau were flooded this morning wlien the Aparima River overflowed its banks. Several divellings ivere evaeuated for thc night. The floodbaiilcs along the OtautauStream saved the business area. Large' areas of farm lands are under water but the damage reported is slight. The water is receding tonight. After being 12 feet above normal at Lumsden, the Oreti River fell rapidly and tonight was only tliree or four-feet above normal. Several roads in the district are flooded and motor services were delayed. Water from a flooded creelc at Ohai poured into the openeast mine today. At the peak of the fiood there was about 18 feet of water in the mine, the quaniity being estiinated to amount to 20^000,000' gallons. Arrangements have bpen made for pumping and it is expected the mine will be clear in five or Six days.
