SHANNON R.S.A. MEETS

.MANY MATTERS DISCUSSED The October meeting of the Shannon branch of the Returned Services' Association was held in Laurvig's Hall on Saturday. Mr. J. Ritchie (vice-president) occupied the chair and those present were Messrs. J. A. Reid, R. M. Lange, R. R. Smith, J. Stevens, W. Third, E. J. Veale, R. Quinlan, D. R. O'Donnell, C. Guerin, R. Hook, J. H. Sinclair, D. Purcell and N. Retter. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. Ti S. Downes and V. J. Bateman. The secretary reported that the membership roll now stood at 227 members, being made up as foliows: Shannon 183 and Tokomaru 44. Mr. R. A. Parr was enrolled ks a new member and Mr. D. R. O'Donnell, formerly of the Feilding branch, was transferred in as a member of, the local branch. Mr. E. J. Vosper, who has left the district, was. transferred out to the Hastings branch. A letter was received from monumentalists in Palmerston North advising the cost of erecting a plaque on the base of the Shannon war memorial, in memory of those men who lost their lives in World War II. It was decided to make application to the Borough Council for permission to fix the plaque, and if the necessary permission was granted the secretary was instructed to have the work 'carried out at the R.S.A.'s expense. The town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovis) wrote advising that the council had received a letter from the R.S.A., drawing attention to the conditioh of the Boer War and World War I memorials, and advised that the council had resolved to have certain work carried out when labour and material were available. A communication was received j from the Minister of Rehabilitaj tion (Hon. C. F. Skinner) asking i thc aid of the association in an [ effort to persuade vendors of suit- ! able residential and farm properties , to sell to cx-servicemen. The Minister pointcd out that building ' materials were now coming forfward in a mofe heartening quantjity, and skilled tradesmen from thc j ranks of ex-servicemen were being j trained in their hundreds to hclp ;completc the job of providing i liouses for ex-servicemen. ! The Women's Insbitute extended ! an invitation to t.he branch to be (present at its 19th birthday party, to be held in thc Parish Hall on Thursday, October 24. The invitation was accepted. I Mr. R. Hook reported on the ! Ihe progress made towards thc Shannon district memorial liall, and stated that tlie committee set up lioped to have a canvass of the district made at an early date. Following a discussion on a question that a smoko should be arranged by the local branch, it was decided that arrangements, be put in hand and the fixing of a suitable date be left in the hands of the social committee, following a report as to when the Tin Hat Club1 could be eng; ged as entertainers. Mr. J. Sinclair spoke of the forthcoming flower show arranged by the Women's Institute. Mr. Sinclair stated that the institute had always assisted the R.S.A. during the past, and suggested that a donation be made towards the prize money. It |was agreed that a donation of £2 j 2s be made for two prizes of £1 ls j each in any two sections of the j show. i Mr; 'E. Veale pointed out that j with the approaching of the sum- | mer months 7.30 p.m. was rather j early for meetings, and moved that { in future monthly meetings be | commenced at 8 p.m. This was i carried by the meeting and the (secretary was instructed to advise ! members accordingly. I The meeting closed with a vote of j thanks to the chair. i At the completion of the business the ladies of the Women's Section I provided their usual delightful supper.
