MONTEREY'S FIRST VOYAGE

AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. Malcing her lirst postwar voyage as a Matson liner, the Monterey arrivetl this morning from San Franeisco with S99 passengers, 200 of whom disembarked at Auckland. After two recent trips from Beattie to Yokohama, the Monterey was returned by the United States Army to the War Shipping Adininistration which in tuni handed the vessel back to the Matson company. Five days later she sailed for Auckland for the lirst time since 194.1. The Monterey is adhering roughly to her prewar schedule. She sailed tonight for Sydney and will call at Auckland on October 29 on her return to San Franeisco to undergo reconversion to her peacetiine colourfe and standard. The Monterey had taken Army dependents to Yokohama and brought baek men of the Occupation Foree who had served their time, said her master, Captain E. R. Johanson. Yokohama had been flattened by bombing but the port facilities had been carefullv left lintact although the, lightbouse service was not functioning propeily^ he Eaia. |^=
