MURPHY WAS TOO GOOD
IMPRESSIVE RECORD TO DATE Brilliant 22-year-old Bos Murphy was just a trifle too good . for Roy Stevens in their bout at Auckland recently. Although gameness was shown continually by Stevens, the Hutt Valley boy never looked like being beaten. The bout kept the audience on its toes and the decision in favour of Murphy was not objected to. Prior to his bout with Stevens Murphy had only fought in Auckland once before, and that was as an amateur when he drew with the Auckland champion, Jackie Jenkins. He failed to impress the audience on that occasion, but the fans gave him a good hand when he entered the ring in his recent bout and he justified their support. Since turning professional last year, Bos has fought eleven fights for ten wins. In his other bout, which was his first as a professional, he had to retire on account of A sprained ankle. This year he showed good class in defeating. Vic . Caltaux i n ~a' gr u ellin g ~battl e 1 fbi* the ' welterweight title. Then his surprise victory over the Australian, Vic Patrick, catapulted him to fame, and it was from this bout that he received a nose injury which put him out of action for a few months. He made an impressive return when he K.O.'d Danny O'Keefe in two rounds, and' in his next bout he sent Bobby Clarke to the canvas in the sixth. HiS defeat of Stevens has settled an argument which had been in the air since Murphy won on points when these two met last year. The champion is nearly six feet tall and has to keep to a strict diet to maintain his welterweight. limit. When " Bos fought Patrick he weighed 10.4-2, compared with the 11 stone which he now scales. His extra weight has apparently made him more formidable, as shown by the following facts. Last year he went the whole ten rounds with O'Keefe and .only won on points; it also took him nine rounds to sto'p Bobby Clarke in their bout. His easy victories over them this year proved that he has improved. Added confidence, due to his evef increasing experience and greater strength, appears to have made Murphy a more aggressive fighter.
