MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Monthly Sitting in Levin The monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at Levin yesterday, when Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., presided. Wandering Stock Robert Bryant, charged with permitting a herd of approximately 50 head of cattle to wander unattended at Manakau on September 22, 1946, was convicted and fined £3, with court costs 12s and solicitor's fee 10s 6d. Liquor Near Dance Halls Benjamin John Sewell, charged with .being in pos'session of- liquor in the vicinity of the Horowhenua > College Hall 011 September 6, wIF** j a dance was in progress, was C(Sfc victed and fincd £5, with costs 12s. Similarly charged on the occasion of .a_ dance in the Regent Hall, Douglas Brian Harper paid a penalty of £5, with costs 10s. Having liquor in thq vicinity of the Druids' Hall, Shannon, on September 17 during the progress of a dance cost Lester Edwin Burling and James Henry Campbell £5, with costs 10s. Noel Edwin Baylis and Colin Price, . charged with having liquor in the vicinity of the Ohau Hall on September 28 when a dance was in progress were each convicted ahd fined £3, 'with costs 10s. In these two cases the Magistrate gave consideration to the fact that neither of the 'defendants were associated with the control of a motor ' vehicle. Arthur Murray Boswell, Ronald Leightori Grant and Thomas Newton, each charged with being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of the Ohau Hall on September 28, were convicted and fined £5, with 10s costs. Traffic Breaches Charged with driving a motor lorry at Te Horo on July 26 last in a dangerous manner, Henry Love was convicted and fined £4, with court costs 10s. Evidence produced by Traffic Inspector M. Kehoe revealed that the defendant, driving a heavy lorry, had so manoeuvred his vehicle across the road when passing a car that an overhanging loading tray of the lorry had come across the radiator of the car. Raymond Patrick Nottingham was charged with driving a car at a speed in excess of 40 miles per hour in Oxford Street, Levin, on July 23 last. Traffic Inspector Kehoe gave evidence of checking the defendant's speed at 60 miles per hour, which fact the defendant admitted in a letter to the court. A conviction was entered and a fine of £6, with 10s costs was imposed. For driving a motor car across the railway line at Shannon when a rail-car was approaching, Frederick Butcher (Mr. J. Todd) paid a penalty of £3, with 10s costs. Driving a motor vehicle without being in possession of a warrant of fitness cost William Jury a penalty qf £1, with costs amounting to 10s. Leslie Otto Edward True, charged •with driving a motor vehicle without a driver's license, was convicted and fined 10s with 12s costs. William Edward Simpson was convicted and fined 15s, with 10s costs, for carrying more than two lighted head lamps when approaching another car. Traffic Inspector Kehoe gave evidence that the defendant had approached another car with his headlights and a fog light full on, and had given as his reason for not dimming his lights that the motorist approaching had not dimmed.
