ANOMALIES REMOVED
SALARIES OF TEACHERS WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer announced today that Cabinet has approved a revised sclieme of salaries for teachers. "For some time," said the Minister, "it has been realised that a revision of the pTseu. salary sehemes was necessary. Some months ago, therefore, the Government set up a consultative committee to examine the j>resent salary sehemes and to make any recommendations it considered necessarv in the interests of more stable staffiing and of the teaching profession as a whole. Since the committee 's report was received there have been furtlier disenssions with representatives of the teachers' organisations aiid the Economic Stabilisation Commission. "Although the approved sclieme does not meet all the requests of the teachers ' organisations, it should proyide a satisfactory scale for a numlier of years. The new scale lias eertain advantages over the old which should prove very beiielicial. In the fir^t place it has removed a number of aiiomalies that liave occasioned dissatisfaction among eertain groups of teachers, by bringing two branclies of~the teaching service (primary and post-primary) into closer salary relationship. It is in line with the latcst salary scales for teachers iu England, Seotlaud some of tlie Dominions. "Finally the new scale has been planued to provide more reasonable avenues of promption tliat should go far to reduce the present frequent transfer of teachers and consequent disorganisation of staff in primary sehools."
