Infectious Diseases The following cases of infectious disease occurred in the Horowhenua County Council's district between July 1 and September 30 according to a report received from the health inspector (Mr. W. J. Guinan) at a m'eeting of the councid today : Typhoid fever 1, scarlet fever 4, diptheria 2 and erysipelas I 1. I Cement Being Shipped A large accumulation of cement at the Golden Bay cement works at Tarakohe has been considerably reduced this week. The accumulation was caused by lack of shipping. During the last few days I several coastal vessels have lifted I full loads, and cement is also being j taken by road through Nelson to j Blenheim to go south by rail. Increased Rent of Flat | Amy Murdoch, The Downs, : Geraldine, who pleaded guilty, was I fined £15 by Mr. . G. G. Chisholm, i S.M., in the Timaru Magistrate's l Court for a breach of the Fair i Rents Act by increasing the rent J of a flat from 25s to 35s a week, : beyond the basic level allowed in the stabilisation regulations. This was the first prosecution of this description in Timaru. Price of Hair Cttts Factors pertaining to the proposed increases in haircutting, ! prices were discussed yesterday at i a conference between the New ! Zealan'd Retail Tobacconists and | Hairdressers' Federation and the ! Price Tribunal. It was stated by a j representative of the federation i that although the Tribunal was not ! in a position to implement fully the preliminary increases requested by the industry, its attitude was sympathetic. On Union Black List In the House of Representatives Mr. A. S. Sutherland (Hauraki) i gave notice to ask the Minister of ! Labour if he would advise the j House as to what action he pro- ! posed to take regarding the recent j decision of the Auckland branch of the Carpenters' Union, that workers who sacrifice their afternooh tea break in order to leave their work ten minutes earlier, would have the distinction of having -their names appear on the "Union record" dishonour list. Mr. Sutherland added that workers who had taken such action were characterised as "scabs" and "selfish misguided indiv-iduals." Bomb-throwing Incident A home-made bomb was thrown into the machine room of the Hutt News, in Woburn Road, Lower Hutt, at about nine o"clock on Wednesday night. It exploded with frightening concussion, but there were no casualties although seVeral printers' had a narrow escape. 'The effect of the explosion was considerably reduced by a stack of paper surrounding the place" in which it fell. Fragments of glasS from a bottle containing the explosive substance flew in all directions. The concussion broke the webs of the paper on which the News was being printed. Thick smoke filled the premises. Witnesses saw the bomb thrown in from the Woburn Road door, apparently by someone either running or riding a bicycle. Three schoolboys earlier were observed standin'g behind the corner and it is believed these juveniles were responsible. Boys of Lower Hutt and Petone are known to have ben experimenting with explosive mixtures, and chemists have received many requests for sulphur, nitre, and other chemicals. v,
