BOWLING NOTES

USEFUL HINTS FOR PLAYERS A useful guide hook written by Mr. J. M. Giles and just - issued states that all players, except those actually taking part or engaged in directing . other players, should stand on the bank. Players waiting their turn, or even spectators, should keep their voices low ' and avoid criticising any player in a voice loud enough to be heard by him. The standard mat is 3ft. 6in. in- length and must be placed on the green so that the front edge is not less than six feet from the edge of the ditch at a point from which one is playing. It is. etiquette for the lead of the losing side to place the mat for the lead of the winning side. A hint, if one wants to play good bowls, is to get his own set. Simple rules: Look down at your feet and see that they are pointing in the right direction; look at the bowl in your hand and see that the small disc is facing you; see that the bowl is perfectly level in your hand. Simple things, aren't they, and yet not ten per cent. of bowlers carry them out. Remember: You will play just as good bowls with one grip as with another, providing that the grip you use is natural and, above all, comfortable. You should not resort to physical contortions when delivering a bowl. You may play bowls for fifty years and yet never be able to master weight and width. That is why there are no unbeatable champions. The greater the back movement of the arm prior to actusil delivery the greater the risk of failure. The man who thinks he can win every game will never become a champion; he has another think coming. Courtesy on and off 'the green is as important as getting your name on the honours board. Your skip is in charge of tactics; either obey his directions cheerfully or play for another skip. If you play for a club be proud of its good name. Forthcoming Openings The Otaki Club will open its green for the 1946-47 season on October 19. Members of the club will be present in full force and a large attendance of visitors from other clubs is also expected. The Levin Central Club commences its season on Saturday next, when it is expected that a large number of visitors and friends, as well as members of the club, will assemble to officially open the green. With the green looking better than for some time and a large increase in membership, the coming season . promises to be an ; exiceptionally good one. The exe-! cutive and sub-committees have been working hard in an endeavour to make the necessary arrangements for the season's activities. Railway Club's Tournev The Otaki Railway Club will hold a rinks tournament on October 20, commencing at 10.30 a.m., and already several Wellington rinks have signified their intention of being present. Further Barnett pairs matches will be played on October 13 at 1.30 p.m.
