WELLINGTON, Oct. 7. Prisoners in New Zealand gaols get more rationed meat than people outside. The reason for tliis ration of 16 ounces a day is that prisoners are unable to get any subsidiarv meats, said the Acting Minister of Justice (Mr. Jones) during a discussion on the Estimates in the Ilouse of liepresentatives. Mr. W. A. Bodkin (Central Otago) asked wliether it was a fact tliat tliere was no rationing of rationed foods in prisons. He had beeu assured that it was only a fewvdays ago that any* attempt had been made to ration butter in conformity with the regulationS goyerning the rest of the comniunity. Also, the nieat allowod was in excess of the civilian allowance. There could be no questiOh that prisoners sfiould get the same as other people, but no more, continued Mr. Bodkin. No doubt there were difficulties through tlie fluctuation of prison population, but some attempt should be made to bring the prisons into conformity with -the rest of the people. Mr. Jones said that butter, .tea aud sugar had beeu rationed .from the outset, exaetly the same as to the eivilian population. The only exception was meat. ,
