HAWKE'S BAY GUINEAS TO OPULENT
RANK Ot'TSIDER WINS SPRINT A dividend of over three-quarters oi a century was returned when the rann outsider, Royal Duce, won the open sprint event, the Stewards' Handicap, on the concluding day of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Cltib 's spring meeting at Hastings on Saturday. The feature attraction, the Hawke's Bay Guineas, was won in impressive style by the favourite, Opulent. Conditions were ideal and there was a very large attendance. Capronella Again Capronella repeated lier first day's performance almost exactly in the Russell Memorial. The Greenmeadowsmare was slow to find her feet and wa» last with a mile to run. She made a fast move in the baek stretch to jom Aqueduct. half a mile from home. Capronella just had her nose in front straightening up, but was. shortly afterwards called upon to withstand a chailenge from Cinna Bay and CattericK Bridge. However, she was going just as well over the last half a furlong and accounted for Catteriek Bridge devisively, while Cinna Bay finished a close third. Jonathan Jo and Casilda, who were not too well placed in the eariy stages, canie home well for fourth and fifth respectively from CarnfortU, Ernbrae and Aqueduct. Opulent stamped himself a really high class three-year-old in winning the revived Hawke's Bay Guineas, scoring like a stayer, and it is a pity that he has no further classic engagemonts. Due to the stfong paee set by Morocco, who was carried along by another grey, Karachi, from the five furlongs, it waa a stayer 's race and Opulent was able to improve a eouple of places to be liandy in behind the leaders as they straightened up. Almost inimediately he asserted his superiority and, althougq Morocco fought back gainely for hail a furlong, Opulent came right away to win by a big margiu from the Theio gelding. Rosswood, who had tailed the lielo for more than half the journey, caiuti fast in the straight to just take thiru money off Karachi and Dancing Girl. The totalisator liandled £56,807.
