Hulabalao Scores at Long Odds
Tote Increases £13,794 Altliough four favourites were successful, there were several good dividends on the opening day of the OtakiMaori Racing Cl'ub's spring meeting: on Saturday. The upset of the day. was the* win of ; Hulabaloo' in the principal event, theyLing Memorial Handicap, the' Wanganui gelding returning his few supporters :a straight-out dividend' of just over tw6 score. ' The weather was fine and there was a very large crowd present. The track was holding after recent rain. The totalisator handled £72,105 10s, compared with £58,311 -for the one-day meeting last year, an increase of £13,794 10s. An Easy Win Racing into the lead froin barrier riso Bay Robe soon liad the field well strung out in the Kapiti Hack Hurdles and, juniping evenly throughout, he never looked like being keaded to win by a wide inargin. After being under a kard ride for most of the journey, Greek Dancer finished best of the others to take"second froin Rockanui, who had been the winner's ciosest attendant practicaliy throughout. Gold Claini came froin the rear* to be a poor fourth, and then at intervals followed Leybourne, who lost a lot of ground at the Btart, Te Ranui, Theolateral and Kahui' aponga. Favourite Scores After being allowed to drop in behind the leaders,' the favourite, Idle Along, was not asked for an effort until well inside the distance when he finished splendidly wide out to win the First Puhi Maiden Plate going away. Sabulum, Tortago and Cincture comprised the early leaders, Cincture being the ac'tual leadcr as they turned into the straight f'rom Tortago, Idle Along, Sabuluin and Goody Two Shoes. Just when Cincture and Tortago looked like lighting out the issue, Idle Along put Lu an appeai-ance and soon settled 'the issue. Goody Two Shoes finished ciosest to the plaeegetters, and then came Beaulitha, Wee March, Sabulum and Flying 'Swan. . Belle Zorra TTnlucky Backers were again pn the mark in the Pahiko Hack Handicap, the favourite Sea Fury winning with a little in hand from the little-fancied Royal Baron. The unlucky runner was Belle Zorra, who lost several lengths at the start and finished fast from the tail of the field in the straigh't to be a close fourth. - y Sea Fury was the firs't to show oht, but Carmelita theu rushed to the front, being joined at the half-mile by Geughiz Khan, this pair showing the way past the half-mile from Sea Fury, Priuce Wanaka aud Royal Baron. Carmelita -lost her positiou approaching the turn, and Genghiz Khan and Royal Baron led into the straight from Sea Fury and Prince Wanaka. Once the favourite put in her elaim, however, the issue was soon beyond doubt. Royal Baron battled on to hold oflf Prince Wanaka for second, with Belle Zori'S| close up, followed by Carmelita, Genv ghiz Khan, Iron Duke and Otamaire. Golden Acre broke down and was pulled up in the straight. A Convincing Win At odds of over two score, Hulabaloo compieteiy surprised backers in the prineipai event, the Ling Memorial Stakes, by finisliiug much better than anything else and scoring decisively. The soutlierner Lord Elgin attempted to lead throughout, aud was followed in the early stages by Barrage, Lord Darnley, Behave, Voltaire and Ganges, the rear being brought up by Flahuluk. Passing the half-mile the leader was stiii bowliug along freely a length ahead of Barrage, Lord Darnley, Hulabaloo, impi'oviug his positiou, and - Behave. Sustaining his run Hulabaloo ranged up to the leader approaching the turn, and the pair straightened for the linal run ahead of Barrage, Tutere, Behave and Silver Rod, with Flahuluk improviug rapidiy. Over the last furlong Hulabaloo came away to win pointlessly from Lord Elgin, who had little difliculty in- holding olf Tutere for second. Silver Rod Was fourth, and
then came Barrage, Behave; Flahuluk and Voltaire. ; Anotherto Wanganui Wanganui- trained horses and the jockey K. Chote had their third auccess when Mr. Pym led throughout ito win the Second Puhi Maiden Plate. Mr. Pyin was smartest to begin, and passing the half-mile had Afton Water, Horouta, Castlebrae and Oinerous as his nearest attendants, the favourite Lady Oratory being hear the rear after niissLng the jump out. With the exception of Lady Oratory, who had gradually iniproved her position, there was no change in the order racing to the turn. Over the concluding stages Mr. Pym held on under a hard ride to withstand a late challenge from Homespun, with Horouta weakening into third. Lady Oratory, who went very wide. at the turn, was a close fourth followed by Toki Ngapo, Castlebrae and Bulaselle. Never in Doubt The Katihiku Hack Handicap proved the best of good things for tlie locallytrained Supreiiie who, after taking charge at the half-miie, never looked like being headed in the straight. Grey Donne, Tremelio and Supreme were the early leading division from Hadrian, Rickie and Sergeant Jack, but Supreme went out clea'r before reaching the straight, and from then on gave her supporters no c'ause for anxiety. Tremelio finished fairiy well to hold oS Sergeant Jack for second, with Begowned, Moutoa Lord, Culloden Moor and Hadrian next. Sprinters Outclassed Displaying rare briliiance, the former southerner Peter Gazelle compieteiy outclassed the sprinters in the Hema Te Ao Handicap, and he won by a wide margin from the three-yearmld Robin's Reward, who was his ciosest attendant practicaliy throughout. Peter Gazelle soon reached the front and, passing the half-mile, had a break of two lengths on Robin's Reward, with Speciaiist, White Cap, Peter Theio and Deprive heading the other3. The leader increased his advantage rounding the home turn and was not c.hallenged in the run home to win easily. Robin's Reward held on ,for second from Battle Dance, who finished strongly, and then came Theocritus, Salmi, Gay Lena, Imperial and Deprive. Overdue Success At double-figure odds, Grand Central scored a long-overdue success in the concluding event, the Taumanuka Hack Handicap, a charmed run on the rails assisting liim to get up in the last few strides to head off the lesser-fancied Nanaaki. After losing ground at the start Coek Robin was rushed into the lead early, and passing the half-mile was closeiy followed by Genghiz Khan, Matawene, Brown Derby, puiling hard, Tahli and Sari. The leader had had enough before reaching the straight, and Matawene took over founding the turn from Brown. Derby, Genghiz Khan, Tahli and Nanaaki. The last-named collared Matawene at the distance, but Grand Central then came through on the inner and in a battling fmish gained a narrow verdint, Matawene weakened slightly to be a moderate third ahead of Tahli, Salut di'Amour, Bari and Genghia Khan. ■ - ■ j Details of'"reault9: — KAPITI .* HACK HURDLES, £300; ljr miles. 1-2 BAY ROBE, 9.9 (C.
