BIGGER SOUTH ISLAND EGGS

WELLINGTON, Oet. 4. The boast that* eggs in the South Island as compared with the North were "bigger, better, freslier, and laid by happier hens" was made in the House of Representatives last night by Mr. J. T. Watts (Riccarton). Bpeaking to the Agricultural Department's Estimates, Mr. Watts said that poultry producers were anxious for the publication of suitable statistics of their industry. These should be made a\*ailable year by year and included in the agricultural and pastoral census. There was no clear record of what was happening in the industry. The Minister in charge of the Estimates (Mr. Skinner): From now on these figures will be made available. Mr. Watts added that South Island producers had approached the S'tabilisation Commission with a request for an increase of 2d a dozen in the price of eggs. They had been get'ting 2d a dozen less than North Island producers to compensate for shipping charges, but their view was that they would rather receive the extra 2d and pay their own shipping charges.
