EXTRAORDINARY SCENE
SYDNEY, Oct. 4. Extraordifiary scefies were witnessed in the Central Couri thday when the Llagi^trate, Mr. Farfington, committed Major Charles Hughes Cousens, aged 43, for trial oji a charge of high treasorwhile a prisoner of war in J apan. ' About forty people, most of whom attended throughout the 24 day hear ing, rashed from the back of the Court and gathered ahofit Major Cousens. shaking hira by the hand and patting him on the hack. The Magistrate said he doubted whe ther prosecutions of 'this nature could he brought in New South Wales. It might he that the Attorney General would decline to file a Bill. He had decided that there was a prima facie 'case to answer and the deeision was now up to the jury. He ordered Major Cousens to he held in the custody of the Court rather thar to he returned to the cell. Bail wai fixed at £500. This is described by the Chief Justiee, Sir Frederick Jordan, as an almost unprecedented indulgence after com mittal for trial on a charge of high treason. Bail was not opposed.
