Received Saturday, 10.30 a.m. ' NEW YORK, Oct. 4. Seven were killed and 200 injured when Uiree expiosions set fire to ihe Sun Oil Uompany's 13,000,000uoilar alkalisation plant on the Delaware River, states a message from Marcushook, Pennsylvania. .nneteen of the injured are in a critical condition. Damage to the plant is estimated at 300, OuO dollars. An eyewitness, describing the jlast, said a huge ball of fire seemj.d to roll around, hit and ignite everv building. The first explosion occurred at 8.10 p.m. yesterday, follov/ed by minor expiosions tof tanks and cylinders. A second explosion came an hour later and shook an area 15 miles in diameter. Tankers in the river hastily withdrew, Ambulances and firefighters from all the surrounding communities were called up. The fire was reported to be under control by 10.15 p.m. The company stated: "A packing gland which failed caused gas to escape and flash, touching off the expiosions."
