WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. Today the Social Security Department had 700,000 men, women and children under its care and by the end of the year the figure would reach 720,000 .said Hon. W. E. Parry in the House of Representatives tonight, when moving the seeohd reading of the Social Security Amendment Bill. -*-■ The Minister, replying to points raised by opposition members, said soldiers' wives qualified for benelit when they arrived in New Zealand, so long as the service pay for the soldiei had ceased. A wife who had been divorced was not classed as a deserted wife but if she required help she eould apply for an emergency benefit. The Bill was read a third time, put through remaining stages and passed.
