WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. Not only all the xnoney yielded by the petrol tax, but also 40 per cent. more, had been spent on the roads, said the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) in the House of Representatives during the discussion on the Estimates. He would suggest, he said, that motorists would be well advised to be content to get from the Public Aceounts 40 per cent. more than the petrol tax. It would be unfair to say that every penny used on roads" should be eharged to the motorists as other vehicles had the use of the roads. Mr. Nash's statement was in reply to critieism that an insufficient sum was being voted" for the maintenance and repair of roads. Mr. II. Johnstone (Raglan) interjecting: " There Js a large sum of petrol tax — -will you spend that. on the roads? The Minister of Works, said Mr. Nash, eould not have more money than was available. On the one hand the Opposition eomplained that taxation was too high, and on the other hand it advoeated the spending of more money»
