-Press Asshciation

FINE FOR BOOKMAKING

Bv Telearavh-

HAWERA, Oct. 3. William Henry Cole is an unlucky barman. When back at the White Hart Hotel one night to give a hand to fix up a beer pump he emptied his pockets on to the bar counter in search of something required for the pump. A police sergeant noticed the lights in the- bar and came in. The sergeant picked a scribbling pad from the counter and found it eontained -records of bookmaking. Cole admitted having taken bets for'-a short period, and in .Hawera Court yesterday -was fined £10. Counsel for Cole contended that the Sergeant had no rifht to pick up the pad, but the Magistrate, Mr. A. L. Salmon, said Cole had -admitted having taken bets in the bar and the evidence of bets in the pad was not contradicted.
