NEW RAILWAY BRIDGE AT LONGBURN

As tlie result of investigations made by Railway Department omcials the old Manawatu railway bridge at Longburn is to be superseded by a new structure. This was disclosed by an official of the Railway Department yesterday. The new site for the bridge is to be approximately a quarter of a mile downstream from the old structure, this having beeu decided after extensive foundation research, bores being put down to depths of 100 feet to test for foundation stabilitv. Optimism regarding tlie early starting of the work and its comparatively early completion was expressed, it being stated that the probable time of erection would be about -two years. It was also stated that no plans for the bridge had been drawh up so that there was no knowing what form it would take. It could be a single track structure although as it is proposed to duplicate the traclts in this area in the fut.ure it was possible that it would be a double track bridge. The present bridge has seen many years in service. It is 1180 feet long and has timber tru3s spans on iron bark piers.
