TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY MATINEE TUESDAY 2 P.M. "They were Expendable," costarring Robert Montgomery and John Wayne, and opening on Tuesday at the Regent screen, was adapted from William L. White's best-selling ,narrative of the part played by.-Torpedo Boat Squadron No. 3 in the Philippine campaign. The plot follows the heroic action of this gajlant group throughout the many phases of the battle. These are the men whc enabled high-ranking officers , to escape on a perilous trip out of Bataan under the noses of Japanese destroyers; the courageous few who had to be "expendable" in order to slow the Japanese offensive. Only a few of the squadron survived but this powerful story of their courage and devotion to duts* will live as a saga of grim bravery. Together with Montgomery and Wayne, the cast of "They were Expendable" features Donna Reecl, in the film's only featured feminine role. It was directed by Capt. John Ford.
