TIMBER WORKERS TELL THE GOVERNMENT
GREYMOUTH, Sept. 26. The Westland Tiniber Workers' Union executive resolved that the Gov- - ernment be advised that "this union views with alarm the huge credits by way of dollar funds exceeding £10,000,000, made available for the'iniportation of foreign timbers when,' to secure all tiniber requirements for a well sustained building programme, it is only necessary to pay tiniber workers a wage more in keeping with the wages of other dozens of workers in aeeordance witli the nature of the. work performed, Further, our housing conditions should urgently be brought to a more civilised stafidard thau the 40-year-old standard now existing. Failing these reforms tlie country's econoniy will be seriously retarded. We also wholeheartedly endorse tlie efforts of the watersiders and other workers ' to have overtime payments freed of taxation, it being useless to work overtime when a large pereentage, of such earniflgs has to be paid in' taxation."
