Candidates for Hastings
AWAPUNI HOESES IN PORM Fif teen 'Awapuni-traincd .horses have eugagements on the lirst day of the Hawke's Bay Joekey Club'a spring moeting at Hastings on Waturday and. as the majorfty have had the benefit oi rOcent racing, it should not be for lack of conditiou if they fail to race prominently. Oue of the most interesting of the candidates is the three-year-old Voltaic, who has now won at his last tliree starts and has deilnitely shown himself to be a particularly smart galloper. The Ilevelatiou gelding, although ho was far from ready, was a class above tlie hacks opposed to him at Carterton recently and, as he . has made appreciablo improvement kince then, his chunces .are -viewed very liighly in the Flaxmere Handicap.- Voltaio will again liave the services of the promisiug apprentice A. Bowliess. Another hack sprinter above the average is Dutch Mary who, having her lirst race since she was badly injured in a fall at Feilding last Easter, spreadeagled the opposition in the Farewell Hack Handicap at Marton last Baturday. The half-sister to Flying Ace also appears to have derived benelit from tlie outing and she cau be depended upon to make a bold showing. Dutch Mary. will again be ridden by the stable apprentice, H. Saunders, who is another of thc local lightweight horsemen to have eonie into prominence lately. Making his lirst appearance this Lerm, Prefa went a sound race under his 9.0 in the hack sprint at Marton, and the pleasing part of his performunce was the solid manner in which he iinished into second place. The Croupier gelding looles more solid this tenn and he should liave little difliculty in paying His way from now on. Thunderhead, who is engaged in the Hollycombe Hack Hurdles, made a promisiug debut in his new role at itarton, and had he beon 'kept closer to the leaders he may have proved very troublesome to the winuer, as his linishing ell'ort was a feature of the race. Thunderhead has been thoroughly sehooled and, in spite of bcing all'ected in the wind, he looks capable of picking up a slake or two us a jumper. A Promisiug Novice During tho last week or two the novice Blank Cheque has made uoticeable' progress and it would occasiou no surprise if hc is one "of the main fancies t'or the Imperial Plate. Formerlv trained at Levin, the half-brothcr to Irish Note was taken ulong very paliently as a two-year-old last season and the policy looks as if it will be rewarded this te'rm. Although a trifle baclcward, tlie tliree-years-olds Tribute and Emerge gave very creditablo performances at Marton last week and the puir look eertuin to be bettcr-coiiditiuned when they parade at Hastings. Emerge. won a two-year-old race at Feilding very iinpressively at the latter enti of last season and tlie son of Christopker Kolrin is regarded as a potential -middie-distance jicrfonuer in the making. ; The juveniles Petre Mar, Motcorina and L'bbriaco will represeut the centre ' in the Hastings BtaJi.es. Tlie two lirstnamed wero seon out at Marton, Petre Mar making quite a creditable showing for fourth. Ubbriaco, who has not yet raced, is a speedy looklng type by Jovialitv from Cloyue. However, the trio wiil not be greatly fancied against the opposition, which includes Demonic and Distinction. Newel Post uevfcr runs u bud race and, in spite of his being at the top oi the handicap, cannot be left out of culculations in the middie-distance hack event. He is a hafdv customer and has stood up to his racing in great style, in fact he has ueyer loolced belter.
