TORRENTIAL RAINFALL

— _ — MUCII FLOODING AT SHANNON Many stormwater channels and culverts were unable to cope with the torrential downpour between 9 and 10 a.m. yesterday morning, and consequently roadways were flooded for a short period. On the main street in front of the post office water v/as half way across the footpath and roadway, while at the railway station almost all the lawn was under water and a miniature river swept out of the main gates. Not for many years has so much rain fallen in such a short time. The country districts around Shannon are also suffering from the heavy nfin over the last day or two. The Old Foxton Road is again under water; this is caused by backing up of the drains ' in the area. Buckley, Moutoa and Opiki also have their share of surface water, which adds to the inconveniences caused by the recent floods.
