murphy outclassed clarke DECISION NEVER IN DOUBT
(By "
Bos Murpny outeiassea Bobby Clarke of Australia in six rounds of a scheduled twelve round bout, held at Greymouth last Saturday. At n,o stage did Murphy have the decision in doubt, and in the sixth round his two-fisted attack made a deep gash in Clarke's eye. When the bell went the 'referee, after Inspecting the injury, awarded the fight t'o Murphy. The New Zealander is improving with every fight. Caltaux's Comeback One of New Zealand's gamest boxers, Vic Caltaux, staged a good return to form when he knocked out Tommy Downes, of- Palmerston North, in the fourth round of their scheduled 12 rounder at Hastings last week. Caltaux showed determination and never gave his opponent much chance to cause any damage. A leading critic, who has seen Caltaux in action before, said: "I never knew Vic could deal out so much punishment at such a rate as he did to Downes. He received a little, but sure gave it out to the receiving end." The Aucklander went in with non-stop fighting tactics, which are quite unusual for him. His performance on the whole was first class and he should not have any difhculty in securing more bouts. It is possible that he may issue a challenge to Bos Murphy, who took his welterweight title from him earlier in the year. Dunne Does Well Hard punches pius expert footwor.k were the key to Ray Dunne's success over Noel Dornan in the second r.ound of their bout at Wellington last week. The New Zealander was never given a chance to take the offensive, and for this reason he was at a disadvantage. Dunne's hard-flicking left had Dornan baffled most of the time. Dunne's most effective punch is his ri'ght ' upper-cut, with which he floored Dornan. Although dazed and groggy, Dornan showed great determination by attempting to fight back in his helpless condition. Dunne is solidly built and possesses both a hard-hitting left and right. He attacks with the same style as Bos Murphy and he may meet Murphy in the near future. Mauriello was Game Garne, Tami Mauriello was just not in the same class as Joe Louis in their bout last week. Mauriello, 's determination alone is worthy of praise. The Brown Bomber weighed 15st. Ulbs., the heaviest, he has ever scaled. He told a well-known sports critic just before the fight that he was not in the mopd for a long fight, and Joe evidently rneant what he said. Wheh, Mauriello was asked to say a few y/ords int6. the microphone after his,- defeatf he said: "Joe is really a credit,to the game." Only a real sportsman would say that after his defeat. Although it- is nqt yery w'eli knowhj Mauriello has a - deformed foot, which is the result of a car acbident when he was a boy.
