OIIHISTOH UKCH, !8ept. 22. A northwest gale with a peak gust of 73 miles an hour, swept the citv and province this morning. There were Sevoral gusts of over (30 miles an liour and the average velocltv was 35 miles an hour. The gale abated shortly bet'ore iioon. Only minor dauiage was caused tliough there were some temporarv interruptions to the povver and telephone serviees, mostly caused by limbs from trees falling on the lines. Ten sheets of iron were blovvn ofl; the CUieviot Tovvn Hall. During the height of the gale, a small eentreboard vaclit capsized in Lyttelton harbour and the occupants, two voung lnen, clung to the overturned boat for un hour and a-half before being piclced up bv a dingliy which, hovvever, could not get liack to port against the vvind and the partv landed on Quail Island. A launeh vvas sent from Lyttelton aud after 'some delay caused bya low tide, picked the party up. The two occupants of the yacht landed at Lyttelton elad ih sacks, having discafded tlieir eTothes while clinging to the bottom of the boat. k ^
