TIMARU, Sept. 20. t In the imterests of refereeing and Rugby generally in New Zealand, the :New Zealand Rugby EJnion should make representations to the New Zealand Broadcasting Board to have Rugby announcers "vetted" before they periform further over the air, said- Mr. L. V. Bryant, of Timaru, who was referee In the reeent match between Southland and Australia at Invercargill. Griticis■ing the broadeaster from the Invercargill station, Mr. Bryant contended tliat the fuiictiow of a commentator was to give list'eners a fair running comment;ary but he elaimed that on the occasion of the recent match the man at the microphone did a distinct. disservice to the referee and football in general. Mr. Bryant cited several instances in which erroneous informa-tion regarding his control of the game had been given listeners and the impression was conveyed that the'game was almost a fight I fr'om start to- Hnish. It was not. He had not caution-ed anyone and had no meed to. Referees, he contended, should be proteeted against unfair attacks on fcheffi durittg the progress of a match. • The A»8fraliah& were satisfied and it Ayae unfortunate that the criticism was !ma-de in, sueh a way by the announeer.
