V Tennis Club's Opening At a meeting of the committee of the Levin Tennis Club this week it was - decided to officially open the 1946 season on Saturday, October 19. Aircraftman Killetl James Gavin Hughan, aged 20, aircraftman, was killed instantly when a crane he was operating in the railway goods yard at Wellington yesterday morning, touched overhead electric power lines. Victim of Boat Tragedy The body of the third member of the party whose small boat was swamped on Wednesday afternoon in Auckland harbour, was found near the Rangitoto wharf. He was Eric J. Roseman, defence purchase officer of the Army Department, married, of Mission Bay. Junior Chamber Tea The guest speaker at the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce's tea on Thursday next will be Mr. Noel Mackay, of Wellington, who recently gave the chamber a brilliant talk .011 the jet plane. On this occasion he will speak of his experiences in Germany following the cessation of hostilities. School and Church Entered This week the Foxton police received advice that the school at Rangiotu had been entered during the week-end and various articles, including a radiator, immersion heater, spade, etc., were stolen. On prosecuting their enquiries they found, further, that the Presbyterian Church had also been entered and various articles including crockery stolen from there. The Hauraki Seat Labour's candidate for the Hauraki seat is Mr. John William Neate, of Ngarimu Bay, Thames Coast. At one time he was assistant traffic manager and chief traffic officer of the Auckland Electric Tramway Company, Ltd. In 1938 he contested the Waikato seat against Mr. W. S. Goosman. For the past five years he has been 011 the Hauraki Plains County Council and the Thames Hospital Board. Preference Not Proposed No recommendation _ 011 the admission of Jewish immigrants is made in the report of the Dominion Population committee. The committee's report expresses doubt whether, because of the housing situation and of the demand at present for special types of workers, it is advisable to recommend preferential treatment to any particular type of immigrant, although some obligation on New Zealand's part in connection with displaced people in Europe is iileseapable. Two Maoris Fined According to the song the good old practice of rolling out the barrel is fun. To two Foxton Maoris it proved a costly business when they rolled a 36 out of the Post Office Hotel storeroom during the early hours of Sunday morning, however. At the Foxton Courthouse on Tuesday, Tau Te Wiata and Mohi Matakatea were jointly charged before Messrs. F. W. Vickerman and J. Killick, J.sP., with the theft of 36 gallons of beer, the property of A. G. Holland. Both pleaded guilty. Each was convicted and fined £10 and ordered to make restitution of £2 14s 9d' and pay 7s 6d cartage. Five weeks was allowed to pay the fine. Tag On Empty Houses The executive of the New Plymouth R.S.A. is obtaining a list of empty houses in the town and will have them photographed and the photos tagged with the owner's name and address so that R.S.A. members can obtain the owner's or trustee's name and address. The president, Mr. Murdoch Fraser, at a meeting of the association, after expressing the opinion that it was the association's duty to see that ■ the best use was made of materials and houses available, said this was not meant as a threat naturally but the executive felt that if owners could hear at first hand stories the association had heard of hardship, they would. not permit the houses to remain empty. Squatters in Tasmania can be forcibly ejected, fined £100 or sent to gaol for six months, according • to provisions in a Bill passed by the House of Assembly. The Premier, Mr. Cosgrove, said that the pro- ■ posal was drastie but necessary. Lawlessness would not be permitted in Tasmania.
