ST. MARY'S SHOW

The Century Hall was the scene of a delightful display of different varieties of flowers yesterday, when the St. Mary's Guild opened its 1946 spring show. A good number of entries were recefved, and horticulture of a high standard was evident. Prominent among exhibits was the central stand, which was gay with a colourful display of magnificent narcissi. Less prominent, but nevertheless the object of great interest, was a fine exhibition of orchids by Mrs. A. J. Black. On display were about twenty of the enormous number of varieties of this well-known but rarely seen flower. Throughout the afternoon a large c owd passed through the doors. The Rev. G. B. Stote-Blandy opened the show, in the absence on holiday of the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin. Mr. Stote-Blandy said £hat Mr. and Mrs. Burdekin's presence would be missed. Mrs. Burdekin had been an extensive exhibitcr and a frequent prize-winner. The weather had probably been responsible for a slightly smaller number of entries than last year. He spoke of the connection of religion and garden. An annual flower show was a constant reminder to "consider the lilies of the field," he said. Mr. Stote-Blandy concluded by thanking those responsible for the show's organisation, Miss P. R. Wilson, the secretary, and the stewards, judges and %xhibitors. The judges were: Cut flowers, Mr. J. Dallenger; narcissi, Mr. J. T. Graham; decorative, Mrs. D. A. Scott.
