RIMUTAKA TUNNEL MAY TAKE SIX YEARS

W \j I UiN } bept. 10. Engineers consider live or six years wili be taken in building the Rimutaka tunnel whicli, next to Otira, wili be the longest ever eonstructed in Xew Zea land. Preparations are bein'g made to commence work on the access road whieh wili lead from the vicinity of Pigeon Bush up the vallev of Lncena creek on the Wairarapa side, for two miles to where the northern portal of the tunnel wili be. It is expected it wijl bp some montlis before work is started on the aetual tunnelling opera tipns. Erc^n 150 to 200 men wili be required for the job. When it gets properly under way about 80 experienced tunnellers wili be wanted but it is not considered tliere wili be any hold up through laek of trained men. The Rimutaka tuunel wili be 4? miles long eompared with Otira 's 5 miles 25 chains, but uowliere near the same length of time is expected to be taken with the new tunnel. With less rainfall in the Rimutakas than at Otira it is thought water wili not present the same problem.
