DUNEDIN, Sept. 15. A crowd of 30,000 at Carisbrook on Saturday, saw New Zealand beat Australia by 31 points to eight, in the first Rugby football test match between the two eountries since the illl Blaeks' tour of the Commonwealth in 1938. A bone dry ground encouraged the exhibition of open football but a hot gusty wind caused both sides to make many mistakes and play was very brolcen. The All Blacks were superior because of the success of the forwards in winning the ball from the scrums and rueks and because of their ability to link up in strong passing ruslies. The Australian backs fully held their own but the side laelced finish and the forwards did not scrummage with sufiicient solidity. The crowd was treated to a display of passing and running wliieh was always iiiteresting and at times exciting but both sides made many mistakes and Australia would have kept the score much more even but for inability to capitalise scoring opportunities. Tries were scored for New Zealand by W. G. Argus (two), J. Finlay (two), J. Ilaig, F. E. Allen and R. W. White. R." W. Scott converted five. C'. C. Eastes and T. Allan scored for Apstralia and A. Livermore converted one try.
