LOCAL AND GENERAL
PcrsonRl Miss Betty Todd, of Auckland, is spending a holiday in Shannon, where she is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Roach, Stout Street. Mr. R. Parr, of Thompson Street, left last evening to spend a holiday with his sister, Mrs. Stewart, of Whakatane. Messrs. M. Moynihan, D. Pigott and A. Gunning left yesterday morning to spend a few days deerstalking in the hills beyond Mangahao. The friends of Mrs. L. Payne, Grey Street, will be pleased to hear that her infant daughter, who recently underwent, an operation at the Palmerston North Hospital, has now returned home. Rev. J. W. Martin and Mrs. Martin are holidaying in the Hawke's Bay district. Mr. Martin has not been in the best of health lately and hopes to benefit from the change. Representative Footballers The following Shannon players have been chosen in the Horowhenua representative rugby team to play against Wellington next Saturday, D. Aitchison, D. Pedersen, C. Mortimer, D. Fuller, N. Callesen and S. Chester. Competition Successes Successful compecitors in the recent Wellington competi tions were Miss L. Lind, who secured a very highly. commended award in the women's Shakespearean recitation open class, and Mr. Richard Lind, who was successful in securing third place in the men's lieder class. Consolation Prizes Mr. A. F. Birss, of Sheehan Street, received a very welcome surprise on Monday morning when he found that he had won a £100 prize in an overseas -consolation. This is the third time that Mr. Birss has been connected with a lucky syndicate, having won two £5 prizes previously. Another lucky Shannon ticket holder was Colin Payne, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. Payne, of Grey Street, v/ho won a £5 prize about two weeks ago. Work Before Play The keen interest taken by members of the Shannon Badminton Club in their forthcoming ball was shown on Monday evening, when players were more concerned with preparing the many- yards of coloured streamers for the hall decorations than they were about playing badminton. On many oceasions during the evening the club eaptain found the courts without a game in progress, in spite of the large attendance. The manner in whieh the members are entering into the spirit of the dance is very pieasing to the club. R.S.A. Welcome Home At a meeting of the dance committee of the R.S.A., held last evening, it was deeided to extend the usual welcome home function to the recently returned servicemen from Italy and Japan. A motion that the function be held in the Druids' Hall next Friday evening met with the favour of the committee, and arx-angements were put in hand for the function. It was agreed that an invitation should also be extended to Messrs. S. Tremewan and M. Moynihan, who were absent from the previous social, to'attend the gathering tomorrow evening. The two recently returned men are Mr. A. Gunning, of the Army, and Mr. R. Parr, of the Navy. The secretary reported that Mrs. E. L. Hyde had given the hall free of cost for the last function, and had offered it again without cost for this social. It was unanimously agreed that a letter of thanks and appreciation should be sent to Mrs. Hyde for her very kind gesture.
