WELLINGTON, ' Sept.i ll. Scliool children should be warned against the eating of hemlock which had caused a number of deaths in New Zealand, said a botanist of the Dopartinent of Scientilic and Industrial Re seareh today. Some scliools had displaved poisonous plants, weeds and fungi, iiicluding hemlock and warned children against them. That practice should be extemled to all scliools. A number of eases of people and stock being seriously poisoned by hemlock had been reported in the Doniinion, he said. It was definitely a serious poison of the alkaloid tjqxe but it was a bitter substance with a most unattractive taste. In appearance its leaf was like a carrot leaf and the plant was a fairly tall one, blooming with a mass of small wliite flowers. It was found in all parts of New Zealand and generallv grows on roadsides and waste land. It is an imported plant with Europe as its place of origin.
