WELLINGTON, Sept. II. Hon. W. Nash, answering Mr. J. T. Watts (Riccarton) vvho had asked foi inereased iniport licences for Britislimade toys, said in the House today timi eonsiderabie ^lanufacturing faeilities for toys had already been established in the Dominion by returned servicemen and civilian organisations and arrango ments now in progress should lead to a large plant being operated by a New Zealand firni in conjunction with o.ne ot the largest British luanuacturers. Ln the meantiiuc, to meet The deniand for mechanieal toys, an alloeation for the imports of these goods from Britain during 1947, had been provided to the extent of 20 per cent. of the value of the, imports ot toys of all classes from all sources m 1938. Moreover, in 1947, as in 1946, imports of meccano and siniilar set.s from Britain and Australia were being permitted to the extent of 33 1-3 per cent of the 193S imports from the same source. "After consideration of the interests of returned servicemen arid other manu facturers within the .Dominion, the Government will determine the extem to whieh further licences for import aro necessary," said Mr. Nash. Mr. Watts said he was most dis satisfied with Mr. Nash 's repjy to the request for an inereased alloeation oi licences for importations of children 's toys from Great Britflin. The toys mannfactured in New Zealand had noi the range or quality of British toys anu the prices were higher. While there was a surplus of overseas funds, eould they not be used to aasist United Kirigdom manufacturers, he asked, and to help bring something to ben^flt the children of New Zealand.
