LEVIN ACTIVITIES

That the- popularity of b?as^ band. musjc will soon" attain the high place that it held in New Zealand prior to the,, war is shown by the large audiences that greet them when they appear before the public. With the reformjng of the local combination, as well as that at Foxton, and the bringing up to strength of the Otaki Band, this district promises to play - an important part in band activities in years to come. The Levin Municipal Band has done some hard wprk practising since it was reformed, and bandsmen have often devoted two nights a week to this task. No doubt- if fine weather had prevailed more would have been seen of this combination over the last few months. However, with the prospect of more settled weather, citizens can rest assured that their band will be heard more frequently in the near future, the next occasion being on Sunday at 2.30 p.m. in the Public Gardens. The band also plans to play in the street on Friday night as soon as suitable arrangements can be made for lighting. The public can also look forward to a renewal of that old-time custom — carolling — as the band intends to give Levin a full programme of all the carols in different parts. of the town at Christmas. Musically-inclined Youths Wanted A pleasing feature of brass bands throughout .New Zealand is the number of youths who are coming forward to become ushe bandsmen of to-morrow. Several towns have a junior as well as a senipr band and the enthusiasm displayed by the juniors is highly commendable. What parents may not know is that they can have their sons taught free of charge by most bands in New Zealand, and the local band is no exception. A new learners' class is in the process of formation by the Levin Band, and vacancies exist" for six players. 'It is desired that youths not less than 15 years of age apply, and parents with musically-minded boys are invited to contact Mr. G. R. Lester, the conductor.
